GlobalCAD - Terrain

Today Global Surveyors helps promote another interesting program " GlobalCAD".

The essential tools in GlobalCAD Terrain make it easy to create accurate and intelligent site surveys and stunning 3D terrain models with a single mouse click!
Working with site survey data forms a critical component of any project. Information can be presented as anything from 2D markers to points in 3D space or contours. GlobalCAD Terrain gives you the tools to generate 'intelligent' surveys, either by converting an existing drawing or starting from scratch. Move any intelligent survey point marker and its associated XYZ value automatically updates to suit the new location!

Furthermore, you can generate 3D surface terrain models covering vast areas with a single mouse click. The terrain is developed by connecting the given survey points and forming triangles to create a surface model. Using advanced algorithms, GlobalCAD Terrain can produce these models as polyface meshes or solids (including volumetric data).

GlobalCAD Terrain supports the entire family of AutoCAD products including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Land Desktop, AutoCAD Map 3D and AutoCAD LT. The software can be installed on a standalone computer or network drive (you can connect the entire design team with total network support options). Further details are available during installation.

Tips and Tricks - 2 extra miles for the client on a building site.

In a previous post I explained how we went that extra step to give valuable service to our clients. We as surveyors, have access to aerial photography, tricky little programs which can geo-reference photos in survey packages ( such a miniCAD 5 ) and print an overlay of our work such as a house pegout on a photo. We can offer those little extra things to impress the client.

How many times have you finished working on a building site and said to the foreman " I'll make a sketch back in the office and fax it over" or " I'll send a plan to the office with my account"?
Do you know that if you follow that sequence of events, the plan takes atleast a week before it actually reaches the building site?
You finish your work, you go back to the office. After making a plan, you make your account and send it to the building company head office. Upon receiving the account and plan, the plan is forwarded to the Project Manager who when he has time will take it ( if he remembers ) to the building site to give to the foreman. It takes too long.

We have system in place which saves and benefits us in time and money.
We have created our own little template A4 and A3 in size. We have our name, a north point, and a space to fill in details about the job. Its a plan template. You can create them like a title block in Autocad. Simply make a dozen copies and keep them in the back of the car.

Once we have finished our job, we make a sketch on the template. We simply sign the plan, and grab a photocopy of the plan before we leave site. The foreman is happy because he doesn't have to wait for the plan and also we have saved time not being in the office. Our field hourly rates are higher than the office!!! ( Get my idea ).
Upon returning back to the office, we make another photocopy of the sketch or scan it and send it via email or post to the Project Manager who will get it straight away.
We sometimes make notes on the foremans A1 plans. As we can't get copies of them, we take a photo with our camera. Just make sure the camera is set to the best quality. When getting back to office we even print out the photo of the A1 plan and attach it with the account. We'll even email the photo the project manager.
So there you have it. We can still provide valuable service to all clients and save valuable field and office time. It might take a few minutes to get it setup but you'll be happy you did.

We at Global Surveyors love to provide you with Tips and Tricks which we hope you will take onboard and use in everyday surveying . Remember we'd love for you to particpate by sending us a post. Post your experience and Tips and Tricks. Its FREE to participate. Visit our Place a Post Section.

Transit Needed

Dear Global Surveyors,

I have been retired for the past 7 years after 30+ years in surveying, construction and civil engineering. I find that I have a need from time to time for a transit for projects on my property. So I am searching for a good working transit. Keuffel & Esser, Warren Kinght, Buff & Buff or Leitz would be fine, 1' or 20" or 30" vernier is also good. The ideal instrument would be a 1950/1960 version of the K&E "Mountain Transit".
So if you have a working transit that is only taking up space in your office please let me know.

Going the extra mile for your client

What extra things do you do for your clients?
Well I'm not talking about shining their shoes, or washing their car, but do you give your client that extra little something so that they'll remember you and recommend you to others.
We sometimes give our clients a copy of an aerial photo showing their property or take a photo as shown here to illustrate what we have marked.
( An aerial photo inserted in the program miniCAD5 using the geo-referencing tool.
To purchase miniCAD 5 click here )

We recently marked a large house, carport, pool and tennis court in the southern highlands of N.S.W. , Australia. For those who don't know it, it can be rather cool and fresh down there. The scenery is beautiful and its a great place to work.
I managed to get up high and take a photo. I drew coloured lines between the pegs I marked.
The client was very happy to see his house outline before it was constructed.
Simple things like this can help you receive more work in the future. You should try it!

Interesting Survey Marks

The other day I stumbled across an old reference tree. I was actually looking for another survey mark to set my GPS on. When I turned around I saw a tree with a blaze and a broad arrow carved in it. I was pleased to find it as there aren't many old reference trees remaining. They have either been chopped down, the ants have eaten them or the tree has grown over the mark making them difficult to find. Ok, I did give it a coat of paint. We use yellow quite abit in Australia.
What colour do you use for survey marks?
Have you found any interesting survey marks lately? We'd really love to know about it.
Write a short desciption about the mark, your name, your location and send us a photo.
Survey marks vary all over the world.
Why not share the differences with your fellow Global Surveyors.
